Hawks Pull Out a Thriller

Both teams played some stingy defense in the early going but Hamilton Heights got things going with the scrappy play from Therron Shelton-Szmidt who scored 7 points consecutively to give the Hawks a 27-22 lead at the 9 minute mark in the 1st half. Jordan Perkins would keep Greensboro Day with 13 1st half points and tough-nosed defense on Kentucky commit Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Bengals went in at halftime with a 32-22 deficit. The second half heated up quickly as the Bengals stormed back and both teams exchanged blows the last 6 minutes of the game as Gilgeous-Alexander and Szmidt cam up with big baskets for the Hawks of Hamilton Heights and JP Moorman would keep the Bengals close as the two teams exchanged leads down the stretch. With :15 seconds left Nickeil Alexander-Walker made two free-throws to put the Hawks up 56-53. After a missed 3pt attempt by the Bengals, the Hawks had a chance to put the game away with free-throws, but Szmidt would miss the 1st of a one and one to give the Bengals one last shot. After a timeout by the Bengals, Jordan Perkin’s 3 point shot to tie rimmed out at the buzzer to give the Hawks a 56-53 victory.

Hamilton Heights will now face the winner of Oldsmar Christian and La Lumiere on Thursday at 7pm in the main gym.
