Georgia Southern signee Braylhan Thomas scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half to help Gray Collegiate over Hillcrest Prep (Ariz.), 53-47, in a National Bracket consolation game at the Chick-fil-A Classic.
Gray will play Combine Academy (NC) on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. Hillcrest takes on The Rock School in the opening game Saturday at 9:10 a.m.
It is Gray’s first appearance in the tournament since 2019. The War Eagles were American Bracket runner-up in 2017.
The War Eagles led 31-23 in the third before Hillcrest went on a 13-2 run capped off by Tristan Beckford’s free throws to make it 36-33.
But Gray answered and took the lead on Darius Carr’s jumper early in the fourth. Then, Thomas made big plays later in the quarter scoring on a jumper and then finding Hunter McGraw for a 3-pointer to make it 49-44 with 1:43 left.
Beckford led Hillcrest with 17 points.
