The War Eagles came into this game riding high after last night’s buzzer beater and continued with that momentum into tonight’s championship shooting at a torrid pace. Providence Day also continued their strong play getting a big boost from Kansas signee Devin Dotson and Santa Clara signee Trey Wertz. Michael Marsh of Gray would establish himself early around the basket scoring 8 quick points. After another three by Wertz with 6:18 to go the Chargers would go up 26-21. Khalil Robinson would put Gray back up 27-26 on a lay up with 4:12 to go and the two teams would continue to trade baskets throughout the rest of the first half at a blistering pace. Juwan Gary would finish off the half with a shot on a stick back with :8 to give Gray a 37-36 lead at the half.
It was a frantic pace to start the second half as Tommy Bruner would put Gray up 50-48 with 9:50 to go in the half. Both teams attacked the rim at will without anybody being able to stop the other. Bruner would hit a three with 8:27 to give Gray the lead again 55-53 as both teams continued to trade baskets. Gary’s basket with 5:58 put Gray up 59-55 only to see Sufferin tie it back up with 4 consecutive free-throws. Down the stretch Gary would score on a put back with :45 to go up 67-65 but Dotson would come back down real quick and score on a runner with :30 to go. From here, Gray would have the last shot but Gary’s jumper with :3 would not fall.
In overtime Bruner would put Gray up with 1:55 left 71-70. Devin Dotson would make 2 free-throws to put the Chargers back ahead for good as Gray would miss several chances to convert in the last minute. The Chargers would go on to win their first Chick-Fil-A Championship by a score of 77-71.
Devin Dotson would go on to be named the MVP of the American Bracket.
